Ft-817 CW key

I have an 817 and I love it but it does seem to generate more questions and answers are hard to come by. I would like to tackle them one at a time. With your help I am sure we will get this done before Field day.
Today the my question is about the CW key. I have a Kent single paddle and a Palm radio pick padel. I can not get the 817 recognize there is a key plugged in. I would think maybe there was a problem with the connector but not with both keys. I also cannot turn on the keyer for CW practice. I am sure the two things are related. I have worked both keys in the past and I know they both work.
Any ideas?

Maybe the paddle is wired up wrong for that radio, two switches effectively with a common ground. You may also need to select CW mode to enable the socket - I don't know the radio, but the manual will probably explain how to wire a paddle up.
